  Case: Lunch time
I have a student who comes to class without a lunch 2/5 days a week. Stating he either forgot his lunch or his parents forgot to give him money. What should I do?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
The first thing I would do would be to talk to the student and ask why he doesn't have a lunch everyday and if there was anything I could do to help.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) Yes
The suggested solution is relevant to the case Yes
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement No
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue No
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: The intentions of the solution are good, but won't solve the problem. Most of the time students don't like to express situations in their home, especially when confronted about them. If you can get them to tell you, thats great! But the reality could be much deeper. I would then go to the higher authority and also set up a parent teacher meeting.

Comments: This is not the students responsibility. It is one of the parents and they should be contacted. If money is an issue, this student needs to receive free lunch.

Comments: This draws attention to the issue which may make the student uncomfortable. In addition, the student should not be making the decisions on how or if you should be assisting them - it should be discussed with their parents.
