Case: Making fun of other students is not nice
There is a student who always comes to class late and stays past the schools time. I always see other students making fun of this students clothes that they wear. This student is always trying to fit in with the other students by making pranks in class and interrupting the teacher when they speak. I have tried to talk to this student but nothing seems to be working. Does anyone have any solutions for me? I can tell that it hurts this students feelings when they get made fun of. I feel like I have run out of options.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
The teacher needs to promote an environment of respect and tolerance in the classroom. She could do this by having students do a self-evaluation activity where they talk about their strengths and weaknesses. It is important that students understand that it is wrong to make fun of others, as humans we all have our flaws. |

Comments: I really like this solution and the activity. This could help reveal a lot about this student and help the teacher know what the next best ste to take could be. |

Comments: This may not work for younger classrooms. Elementary levels may not be completely capable of thinking in these ways and trying to understand themselves and each other in such an in-depth way. |

Comments: Not only does this rely on students to be honest and self-aware enough to make these decisions, but at an early age, many of these characteristics aren't yet determined or still subject to change. Furthermore, spending time on this activity takes away from others, when the classroom rules should explicitly forbid this kind of bullying/teasing |

Comments: I would address the class with a short little lesson or tutorial about making fun of others. I would get students involved by asking questions like, "How do you feel when someone makes fun of you?" once students have gone over their responses, I would reiterate how hurtful and unkind it is to make fun of someone for any reason. I would inform students of ways to cope and handle it in the event they are being made fun of. Remain calm, ignore the bully, walk away, deep breaths, tell a friend, teacher, or adult you trust if you feel it's beyond what can be handled on your own.

Comments: I like the idea of the self-evaluation activity, but I believe there is more to the problem, as the student is arriving to class late and stays lingering after school hours. |

Comments: I agree with having students do an activity but maybe center it around saying one nice thing about each peer. Or learning one new thing about their peers. This may ignite a new conversation that will include the student. |

Comments: I don't find this solution very useful. This behavior has been going on too long for it to stay in the classroom. It is past students trying to figure it out themselves. Further action with this student's family or administration need to be taken. |
