  Case: Cliques
I have two students who are acting out towards the other students. They are both girls who pick on the girls with less friends. How do I stop this without crossing my boundaries as their teacher and not their parents?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I personally would address the entire class. You don't have to mention any students names or examples. The students who are involved will know who they are. While address the entire class I would mention there could be consequences if the behavior continues.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) Yes
The suggested solution is relevant to the case Yes
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue Yes
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: I agree. I would first address the entire class about bullying and maybe even incorporate it into a lesson about bullying. It gives the students the opportunity to reflect on their actions and maybe change the way they treat others before you have to take further action as a teacher.

Comments: I don't think that would work because if a kid is not being addressed directly, they will want to play as innocent as possible, forming the idea in their head that they are not the students you are talking about.

Comments: Speaking with the entire class is good at the beginning of the year, but is not a solution to a specific instance - the students involved will probably not cease unless they are directly addressed and/or face consequences.

Comments: I do not think that addressing the whole class would be the most successful solution. They may all feel that they are in trouble and should not be reprimanded for something they did not do.

Comments: I would not try this in this case. The girls with less friends will be singled out in front of the whole class and I believe giving the extra attention to the cliquey girls might backfire and may it worse.

Comments: I would not do this. Just by addressing the whole class may not stop this problem. The students may not link together that this lesson is about them.
