  Case: Cell Phones
I am an intern in a high school EBD classroom. The students have great difficulty putting their cell phones away, and often ignore me the asked or take it right back out. We are not supposed to confiscate the phones. What should I do to get them to put their phones away?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Instead of getting them to put them away, is there a way to incorporate the phones into the lessons? If they are going to be constantly on them anyway, make them use them for school. A great website that can help is called polleverywhere.com (or something like that). You can create polls and fun text blocks that the students can text their answers to or play games with. This creates a more controlled situation with the phones, especially if they refuse to put them away.

Comments: I understand the desire to want to fix the problem by leaning into their behavior, however I do worry that even by utilizing the phones in a positive way, it is still showing them that they do not have to follow this basic rule put into place in the classroom. Students need to learn that sometimes they will be ok, without being on their phones and that they need to pay attention to the lesson, whatever that might be.

Comments: Creating a controlled environment for cell phone use can be a great idea for some classrooms. Incorporating education cell phone use in lessons and activities can help students feel more engaged and connected to the lesson, while also teaching students how they can use their phones to be productive and complete work.

Comments: I do not agree with this solution, as every lesson cannot incorporate a cell phone. This just shows that having their phones out are okay, and eventually the students will ignore the lesson all together.

Comments: Good idea! I know it isn't the best way to get students off their phones, but if they are going to be on them might as well try to incorporate them into the lessons.

Comments: I agree, however using phones can be distractive to students even if they are doing an activity on their phone. But I do think that it does allow the teacher to have more control over the situation.
