Case: Everything is Gay
Students in Mr. Jones' class have a habit of calling anything with negative gay. Mr. Jones has requested the students find an alternative word but they continue to use it. How can he convince students to not use this word in negative contexts only?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Ask the students if they fully understand what the word means. |

Comments: Tell the students what it means. Then, tell them why you don't tolerate it. Make an example and show the poster of 100 words to use besides gay. |

Comments: While that's part of a way to solve the problem, they may fully know what it means and may be using it anyway. Needs to suggest a solution to whether or not they do or don't know what it means. |

Comments: The word is now slang so to them it has a different meaning than we would think of. The meaning has changed too so it's difficult to have students understand it's real meaning. |

Comments: I don't agree, the likeihood of the student not knowing what "gay" means is slim to none with what kids know these days. I would create a new class rule and with a consequence if the term is used again. Put the new rule and consequence on a handout and have the students sign it - so then they know what to expect when that term is used again. |

Comments: I don't know if this is the right solution. They probably do know what it means already, they just don't care that it's offensive. That's where correction needs to be made. |

Comments: I do not think this is a great way of going about it. I would explain to them what it means and give them other words to say instead. |

Comments: While it is a good idea to explain the definition of words students may not realize they are using in the wrong context, this does not provide a further explanation to solve the immediate issue. |
