  Case: A valedictorian
You are a high school teacher, and Luke Stresswell is at the top of his class with some close competition not far behind. He is doing well in your class, but the focus of the conference with his parents becomes, "Luke cannot get an A- in your class because he is valedictorian." What would you do in this situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would explain to Luke's parents that the determination of his final grade is passed upon his own actions. I would not provide this student with any special treatment or defer from my grading scale.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) Yes
The suggested solution is relevant to the case Yes
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue Yes
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: It's very important that the parents and student understand that no special treatment will take place and that the grade Luke receives was not given, it was earned. The teacher should try to redirect the conference back to its focus after making these points clear to the parents.

Comments: I agree. I would not give the student special treatment. If he earned the grade then he would get the grade, Extra credit could be an option though.

Comments: Explaining your stance on special treatment is a good explanation to the parents on how you will not change the students grade.

Comments: This solution is very effective because it is unbiased. There is no favor for the student or parents, or even for him not getting valedictorian. Instead, the focus is strictly on Luke working well in school to get the honor of being valedictorian.
