Case: Parents Divorcing
You are an elementary teacher, and Wesley Midstuck is one of your students. Wesley's parents are in the midst of a divorce and custody is an issue. You correspond with both parents regularly, however, it seems that their main concern is "digging up dirt" on each other. An example, Wesley came from Dad's on a cool fall day recently, and Mom emailed to see whether or not he had a jacket. How would you handle this situation?

If I were in this situation, I would answer the question listed above honestly because I do not see the harm in the parent caring about their child's well being. If the question were something to incriminate the other parent or outrageous I would respond by stating I do not feel comfortable releasing that type of information about the child. |

| Comments: Good solution. If the question relates to the child's well-being, it should be answered. However if a question is designed to incriminate one parent, teachers should stay out of it. |

| Comments: I agree. If the parents started getting out of hand and asking questions unrelated to the child's well being just so they can "dig up dirt" then that's where a line should be drawn. |

| Comments: By answering the mother's questions or the father's questions, to them they see it as you taking their side on who should have the child. It would be best to tell them that you are their sons teacher and do not need to be in the middle of things. But I would say this in a more professional manner and if this continues let an administrator know. |

| Comments: While it is okay to answer the question - because it is an important question - it is not our place to get involved in the divorce. We are on the child's side and all we can do is care about the welfare of the child; not worry about what is going on in court for the divorce that day. |
