  Case: Integrated Bullying
There is a student in my internship class who has a SLD. He is integrated into a reading intervention class with other students with LD or EBD labels. I have had students ask why he needs so much help and why he is special, and talk poorly about him and the validity of his label. They do this in front of other students and ask the teacher these questions. How should the teacher or myself respond? How do we stop the conversation without embarrassing the student?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This talk should not be tolerated. I would take it straight to administration and the students' parents.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) No
The suggested solution is relevant to the case No
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement No
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue No
The suggested solution is original No
Comments: This is a good idea however, the students themselves should also be given a talk about their behavior and how it will not be tolerated.

Comments: I do agree this kind of talk is not to be tolerated but I would first try to see if I can handle it with the students myself by talking to them and then I would call home and let the parents know - maybe they can give them more knowledge about disabilities. If it continues I would then get the administrators involved

Comments: I feel that, this solution doesn't really teach us to deal or think of options to correct the situation, it just passes the situation off for someone else to deal with it.

Comments: I think that this is something that might be better to address in the classroom first, and then take a further step if it continues after you have spoken to the class about it. I understand that these things need to be taken care of right away, but it is smart to take the opportunity to educate students about situations before immediately going to administration.

Comments: This is not something I would do. The students should be talked to about why this behavior of making fun of others is wrong and during this discussion explain that this is their warning. Then if after that discussion the behavior continues then go to administration. It should not be the first step.

Comments: I think that there are better ways to initially address the problem. The teacher should address the class about it first. If there are no improvements that is when parents and administration can be involved.

Comments: I think it would be better to speak to the students directly first. If after speaking to them, the behavior continues, then parents should be informed.

Comments: Going this far so early is not the best. It doesn't answer questions the students have and might only result in worse bullying than before.
