Case: Cursing
In my high school internship, I encountered many students cursing while inside of the classroom. Sometimes, even the teachers would curse. I do not believe that there is a classroom rule about this issue, and the teachers do not seem to correct students when they speak inappropriately. How should I address their language?

This is something that I would go talk to the teacher first and see why this language is excepted in the classroom and why she curses in the classroom. If she does not give you a sufficient answer then I would go to administration and bring it up to them that you do not feel comfortable about the cursing in the classroom. |

| Comments: I believe as an Intern, this scenario is a slippery slope. I believe one should contact their supervisor before contacting the school administration. The supervisor is here to help make your internship a rewarding experience. The supervisor will do as he/she feels including contacting the school administration with concerns. I think as an intern it is important to be flexible and resilient and also grateful. An intern should not overstep boundaries. |

| Comments: If not used with hostility perhaps certain curse words may be acceptable in a high-school classroom. You really need to pick your battles, and once you earn rapport could work on decreasing a student's usage of these words. |

| Comments: Especially being a student teacher this is a very appropriate step as you are not stepping over any boundaries. Instead, you are reaching out to your coordinating teacher about an appropriate concern. It is important to remember though not to critique the behaviors to the CT, as that is not our position. It would also be beneficial to look at the school's handbook to see what the overall school's policy is about cursing at school. |
