  Case: Lazy Group Members
There is an issue I have observed in a high school classroom in which students were split up into groups of 6 to do a collaboration project outside of class. In one group, only two members were participating while the other 4 did nothing. Time is ticking and the project due date is quickly approaching. The two participating members of the group have expressed to the teacher their frustrations with the lazy group members. They have tried reaching out to the lazy group members, but they are still not participating. What should the teacher do?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Just assign different tasks for different people.

Comments: If you only assign different tasks to different people, the entire group will suffer due to the lazy students who are not doing their part. In turn, the students who are participating will end up with a poor grade. Individual grades are ideal in the situation.

Comments: I would not do this. While it may be a quick fix, you would need to make sure that by assigning the different jobs they are all even with the amount of participation involved. You would also need to consider how to evaluate the group because if one person did not do the assigned job it would negatively impact the whole group.

Comments: This is not the best solution for this problem because certain tasks can be easier and require less effort than the tasks allowing certain students to do less than others and still earn the same grade.

Comments: I think with a group project its good to have the members decided which part they each want to do. But maybe monitoring to make sure they all have a part is a good idea!

Comments: Even when assigning sections, students do not do their part of the work, which requires the other students in the group to pick up their section for the entire project to be done.

Comments: You could do that but if the students aren't doing their work chances are the project won't come together that way.
