Case: Cursing
In my high school internship, I encountered many students cursing while inside of the classroom. Sometimes, even the teachers would curse. I do not believe that there is a classroom rule about this issue, and the teachers do not seem to correct students when they speak inappropriately. How should I address their language?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Cursing sometimes just happens however you can deduct points. |

Comments: This solution does not provide enough reasonable action to the problem at hand. Students need to know WHY their actions are inappropriate, you can’t just deduct points. Students need to be treated like adults; so sit down and talk with them about their actions. |

Comments: This is not appropriate behavior and language being used like this is probably one of the rules in the school and listed in the code of conduct. It should not just be brushed off |

Comments: In this situation, it would not be fair to deduct points from the student when the teacher is cursing as well. It's a double standard that students at the high school age will recognize. |

Comments: While instituting a point deduction system may work, I wouldn't do it since it would discourage the academic work they have completed. This would be a worst-case scenario if it really gets out of control, but not something to be instigated immediately. |

Comments: This doesn't really solve the problem. There need to be rules in place. |

Comments: I don't think young adults would care about points being deducted. There needs to be a solution that resonates with the students. |

Comments: There isn't enough reasonable solution to the problem. The students need a more serious consequence for the teacher to resolve the problem. |

Comments: Not a good idea. Students will expect it and still try to get away with it even if there are consequences. |

Comments: As an adult you should be aware of how you speak. Sometimes you may slip a word out but you should not be cussing on a daily in front of your students. You also should not deduct points from their grade for cussing. Maybe try enforcing a consequence instead. |
