Case: Parent reported student as "shy", what to do?
Tutoring a child after school tomorrow and his mother reports that he is often afraid to ask for help in the classroom. She said she has tried encouraging him to ask for help but has been unsuccessful. Does anyone have any good strategies to use so that he may be more comfortable in his classes to ask for help?

If I was the teacher, I would maybe have times during class where students could "ask a friend" for help. That way if a student felt more comfortable asking a friend, rather than asking me, that student could do so. |

| Comments: I think this is a great idea to help students ease into feeling comfortable asking others questions or for help and then the teacher could build on this to slowly help the student feel comfortable asking the teacher questions in front of the whole class. |

| Comments: This is a really good solution. The student would be able to create a bond with this student and the shyness would not effect his learning as much. The student could ask this friend for help or clarification. Another benefit of this solution would be that the friend can ask the teacher for assistance if neither student can approach the answer, this will provide the child with the help that he needs without him having to ask for himself. Great idea. |

| Comments: I think that asking a friend instead of an authority figure like a teacher, will be easier for students that are shy to get the help they need. Sometimes they may be scared because they are in front of the class, but asking a friend would easily be more beneficial. |

| Comments: Not all students can just walk up to a teacher and ask questions or talk to them without being shy. By giving them time to adjust and also talk to a friend you are helping the student be social and also take time to warm up to the environment. |
