  Case: Cell Phones
I am an intern in a high school EBD classroom. The students have great difficulty putting their cell phones away, and often ignore me the asked or take it right back out. We are not supposed to confiscate the phones. What should I do to get them to put their phones away?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Personally I have faced the same situation with my high schoolers that I am interning with. The use of their phones during instructional time got to be very distracting for both myself and the students. One day before we began class, I conducted a class discussion, with the approval of my CT of course, about cell phones. I posed the question with the students about how they think their cell phone use affects their learning. After holding the class discussion, we came to the conclusion that the students will place their phones face down on their desks while I am instructing and while they do their work. This eventually became a part of the new classroom management plan. At first it did not work well, but eventually students got used to the new routine.

Comments: I think this is great. Students will not feel the irksome feeling of someone else having their cell phone. They can keep an eye on it and it will be obvious to the instructor if they are using their phones.

Comments: I like the idea of having a conversation with the high school students so they can incorporate their own opinions/ideas on how to combat this issue - which would create more ownership for the solution. Students need to know that such behavior is rude and does impede their learning, however, the only thing that I would change is to have them put their phones away all together, not even having them on the desk, because on the desk it might still be a distraction.

Comments: I like the idea of using a discussion with the students having them reason out why it's important not to have phones out during class rather than just telling them.

Comments: This is an awesome solution, that I would use in my classroom as well. If students were more aware of how electronics can interfere with and affect their learning when they're on them in class, they'd most likely be on them less.
