Case: Student - Alcohol - Parents
A sixth grade boy is with his friends on the school bus for an environmental education outing. One boy opens his thermos and drinks the liquid. You notice the smell of wine. You say, "May I see that please?" and take the thermos. After the students leave the bus, you check the other containers. Another thermos holds whiskey. You talk to the boys, verifying possession. Another teacher drives the two boys back to school. The parents are called, and a conference is scheduled for four o'clock that afternoon. What are your thoughts about what you might do in this particular situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would approach the situation gently as I possibly could because I wouldn't want to place blame on the parents who might get angry quickly. I would first start by stating the facts of what actually occurred. Then, I would questions the students as to how they acquired the alcohol and why they thought it would be a good idea to bring it on a school trip. From there I would try to brainstorm with the parents possible consequences, and ideas about how to prevent such a thing happening again. I would stress to the students and parents that alcohol in school will not be tolerated.

Comments: I agree that is a delicate situation and you need to know all the facts from the students before you present it to the parents. Then you need to hear what the parents have to say about the situation with their childand what they plan to do.

Comments: I agree with this solution because it includes the parents in on what has happened and further steps that will be taken to remedy the situation. This allows the teacher and parents to work together to try to stop this behavior. It may also be good to involve the school guidance counselor to see where this behavior is stemming from.

Comments: The direction from administrators might be more harsh than what you're suggesting. I do believe parents need to be notified, but I think the school might have strict consequences to infractions with alcohol, not ones that are come up with working with parents.

Comments: I agree that it is important to have the parents informed as well as get them involved such as a conference. It is important to remind the parents and the students that alcohol in school will not be tolerated and make sure to talk to the parents to prevent this from happening again. Overall a very well thought out and useful plan for this circumstance.

Comments: While it is a good idea, the parents can spin it and say that you are making the whole situation up. That is why it is a good idea to have another teacher witness there with you, so they can also verify the situation at hand. It is better to have a back-up.

Comments: I agree that blame should not be automatically placed on the parents, of course there is responsibility to them because these are minors. Overall, it is appropriate to go through the flow of asking question and holding discussion. Specifically for this occurrence and conversation it must be done with a principal due to the severity.

Comments: There are specific consequences that the administration has for these kinds of problems, and they need to be notified when something like this occurs.
