Case: Describe a time when a lesson was not going well. What did you do about it?
If you are asked this question in a job interview for a teaching position: What are some things you should avoid when responding to this question? What might be some important points to stress that would get the interviewer's attention? How would you respond to this question?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
It is not a very comfortable thing to talk about your failures and mess-ups when you are trying to get a job. However, it is a great opportunity to prove that you are able to learn from your mistakes. I would never answer this question by saying that I have never had a lesson that did not go well. This would make me seem arrogant, and I do not what the interviewer to think that. I would talk about the time that I passed out the wrong worksheet to my class, and did not realize it until a few minutes after I began the lesson. I made a quick change on the students worksheets to make the activity work with the information I was trying to teach, and kept the lesson moving. I did not have a meltdown, and did not freak out in front of the students. I made a mental note to check my materials ahead of time and make sure that I have everything in the correct spot. I could have also checked to make sure that the worksheets were correct before I began the lesson with the students. The most important thing to me is to show that you are able to learn and make adjustments for the future.
