Case: ESOL Student Not Receiving Help
In a fifth grade ESOL inclusive classroom there are three students that came to the United States this year. One from El Salvador, one from Puerto Rico and the other from Mexico(they came the latest in the year). The students from El Salvador and Puerto Rico seemed to be doing very well socially and academically. The student from Mexico seemed to be lacking in both areas. While working in math groups, I noticed the student was simply copying the work of another. The teacher was sitting at the table as well but did not seem to mind it. I felt ultimately the student was not receiving the help they needed to complete the standardized test they were preparing for or in life. What strategies could help this student succeed?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
You mentioned that the two other ESOL students were thriving academically as well as socially. How is your student from Mexico doing socially? The student may be afraid or unable to ask for assistance while working in these small groups. If your other two students are are doing so well, it may be a good idea to put all three of these students in a groups so they can help each other. |

Comments: This solution is best because it involves acknowledging that the student may have issues beyond not knowing the material, but social issues as well which contribute to the problem. Having the student work with other students who may be facing the same issues could help them feel more confident by working with each others strengths and weaknesses. |

Comments: I think it's great to have the students work together. This will help them socially and hopefully academically. I would do the same thing in my class. |

Comments: Great response! As you said they might be nervous or shy to open up and ask for help due to them not knowing much English so they might be more willing to open up and share with the other ESOL kids who know what he is going through. |

Comments: Absolutely, put them in a small group to help them assist each other in being successful and to also help the teacher. However, make sure that they are not always grouped together in class to where it looks like you have separated them from becoming part of the class. |

Comments: I love this idea because putting them together, especially since two are thriving and one is not, will help the lacking kid so much. He will feel more comfortable speaking his first language and hopefully the other two will help them with what they need. Very easy solution. |
