Case: Parents Divorcing
You are an elementary teacher, and Wesley Midstuck is one of your students. Wesley's parents are in the midst of a divorce and custody is an issue. You correspond with both parents regularly, however, it seems that their main concern is "digging up dirt" on each other. An example, Wesley came from Dad's on a cool fall day recently, and Mom emailed to see whether or not he had a jacket. How would you handle this situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This can be a difficult situation. I would respond to the parent answering the question, but then let them know that I do not feel comfortable answering these types of questions. I would say that I am on the side of the student and only want what is best for Wesley. I would also say that I would like to keep this out of the classroom, so that he has a place to go and get away from the situation. I would end it by say that I hope I did not upset the person and remind them that they can come to me about any other situations. |

Comments: I absolutely agree. As a teacher you don't want to get involved with families private issues it is best to stay out of things and stay on the side of the child as their teacher. |

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. The teacher should not feel obligated to get in the middle of the parents' situation. |

Comments: I feel that this is the best solution as a teacher you can do. It is important to let the parents know that you not comfortable answering these questions but if they did have any questions about the students' grades or how they were doing in the classroom you would gladly talk to them about these questions. |

Comments: I think this an appropriate response, because it sets the teacher in a neutral position to the parents. Instead, the teacher is placed at a position that is promoting the student which is what matters. The teacher's job is to ensure student success in and out of the classroom. Which means leaving the drama of divorce to be dealt with the family. Of course the teacher can let themselves be available to the student if they need someone to talk to about the various emotions they are feeling about their parents splitting up. |

Comments: Great solution. I don't think there is any perfect way to handle the situation. Just make sure you are looking out for the student the most and hope that the parents understand and respect that. |

Comments: This is how I would handle the situation. I believe that answering the question, but expressing discomfort will solve the problem but end any uncomfortable questions moving forward. |
