Case: ESE Student Disrupts the Class
When I was interning in a kindergarten classroom, there was one girl who was diagnosed with autism. She was five years old and non-verbal. When things seemed to upset her it was very clear though loud vocalizations and tantrums. The teacher requested to have 1-to-1 aide work with the student but it took months before receiving the help. During that time, teaching time was wasted due to the teacher having to redirect her attention to deal with that student. What kinds of tools could she have used to prevent these behaviors and not take away from the rest the class?

Try to find a way for the student to let the teacher know what is upsetting her. If the teacher can find a way for her to get her feelings out she may stop the tantrums. Maybe try teaching the child simple sign language. |

Comments: How would she find out what was bothering her if the student is nonverbal? I think it's best to push for aide to come into the classroom because the tantrums are now interfering with the other students. |

Comments: This solution probably wouldn't work the best only because they said the student was non verbal and also 5 years old. So I imagine it is very hard for this little girl to tell someone what the problem is. |

Comments: I think that it would be difficult for the teacher to spend more time to teach her sign language. Especially if the teacher does not know sign language themselves. |

Comments: I don't believe that this would work because the case said that the child was 5 years old so I don't think that the child would really be able to express her feelings to solve the problem. |

Comments: Although I do agree with you, I do not agree fully. I believe that ESE students are able to communicate, even when they are none verbal. But instead of trying to teach her sign language where she can get more frustrated if she does not understand, simply ask her or her parents what you as a teacher can do to help. You would be surprised at the many ways students are able to communicate. Even the non verbal ones. |
