Case: Best Friends
In the class I am mentoring, I have three students who I have to work with everyday after school. Two out of three of my mentees are best friends and are constantly talking in their native language. I have tried seating them farther from one another when we all work together, or having me or the third student sit between them. The teacher of the class knows they talk a lot, but only tells me to address it myself.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would ask the student to speak english in the classroom. I would say if they want to speak their native language at recess or at lunch that is fine but in the classroom I need to know what you are saying. |

Comments: Their language isn't the biggest problem, it is the behavior. This solution isn't dealing with the main issue, which is the talking (not what language they are speaking in). |

Comments: I don't think asking them to speak English is the way to go. The issue is constant talking, not so much the language they are speaking in. |

Comments: I do not believe this solution would solve the problem, as it makes their native language seem less important. I would not follow this solution. |

Comments: Doing this is offensive to the students and makes them feel that they are not allowed to be themselves within the classroom. They may be talking to try to understand the lesson, although clearly to much there are other ways to implement authority without telling them they cannot speak their native language. |

Comments: As a teacher you should always support a student's native language and never force them to speak the primary language. If the student doesn't know many words in English and the teacher calls on them they could potentially be embarrassed. |

Comments: You need to be respectful of their native language. Also telling them they are only allowed to speak english can lead to non-participation and discrimination. |

Comments: This is not a good idea. You could be seen as discriminatory because you won't allow the native language. |

Comments: I don't think this is a good solution. ESOL students should be allowed to speak their native language in the classroom, they should just be taught when its ok to talk and when its not, no matter what language it is. |
