Case: Aggressive Behavior
In a class I was an intern for, a student would get random bursts of anger in which he would flip his desk, storm out of the room, or throw books. This behavior was posing a threat to other students, so the teacher isolated the student's desk permanently and sent the student to the counselor. Time and time again, the behavior persisted. Personally, I think the child has some sort of anger management issues, but there is nothing the educator can do solely. What would be the next appropriate action?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I think as the intern you can't take many actions. I would suggest talking to the teacher about placing that student in an EBD classroom. They might get a better education in an environment that they can stay calm in. |

Comments: I think that placing students in EBD classrooms can sometimes do more harm than good. Students can pick up on other harmful behaviors. It also does not respect the dignity of the child to have to be removed. Finally, it may not be a simple task to transfer the student into another class. |

Comments: Moving students to EBD classes is not always the right option. There are many other ways this behavior could be handled by the teacher and other staff at the school. |

Comments: This solution might not be the best way to go about the problem. You never know what the students family life is like at home and they might be having major problems. I don't think secluding the student is the answer but maybe allowing he/she to talk to the school counselor and they can figure out what the problem is. |

Comments: I disagree with this solution. Placing a student in an EBD classroom is kind of like giving up on them. The student might just be having some difficult stuff going on at home and is having a hard time dealing with it. |

Comments: I do not feel that this solution will really work. We can't just send a child off to another class because they're misbehaving. |

Comments: Sending a student to EBD is not always the answer and is a long process to assess. This should not be the next step to help the student achieve. |

Comments: If the student is not diagnosed then testing needs to take place first for a diagnosis. Then they would have to do more testing to see if him going to a self contained EBD classroom would be beneficial or harmful for the student. It is the law to put children into classrooms with a least restrictive environment as well and without a diagnosis and records there is no way of knowing that. |
