Case: Uninvolved parent
I have a parent in my internship class who does not care about the students misbehavior. What can I do to try to get the parent more on the same page with me?

I think the first step should be a parent-teacher conference with maybe a principal or guidance counselor present. It is important to understand a little bit of the home situation because maybe the student is having some difficulties at home that he or she takes that frustration out during the school day. |

| Comments: If the parent is not concerned with the student's behavior I am not sure that they will be ambitious in coming for a conference, sadly, I think the starting point is going to need to come from something other than meeting with the parent. |

| Comments: I agree, as teachers, we never know all that is going on at home. We can speculate all day long why little Johnny is acting a certain way, but until we actually talk to the parent, and empathize with them, we won't ever really know. Inviting the parents into the classroom to talk is a great start to opening up that communication. Though, I would not include any other staff or administration in fear of the parents being too uncomfortable or intimidated by their presence. If the misconduct by the child continues, then I would have another meeting and include the principal or vice principal. |

| Comments: I think that parent-teacher conferences are really important to establishing your rapport with parents. This helps to show that you understand the importance of parent involvement. The parent also may be extremely busy with work, other children, etc. It is important to be courteous and patient when working with these parents.
