Case: Crying in the classroom
In a kindergarten classroom, one boy cries very often. He cries upon arrival and transitioning through the morning. He does not cry during centers, but when it is time to do CVC words at the carpet or table work he cries. I feel it is a means of escape or attention but the co-teacher will baby him into compliance. What could be done?

This sounds like to me he cries because he wants to escape a certain situation or get attention. This is a behavior that is really hard to break. I would not give in because hopefully he will get over it. At home he probably does the same thing and his parents give in to him. If it becomes a huge problem I would have a teacher parent conference with his parents to see what they think you should do. |

| Comments: I also think he may be getting this attention at home. I would do the same thing, remove attention and then talk to the parent. Together the parent and teacher can develop a plan to address the behavior. |

| Comments: Kindergartner is hard due to the fact that before that first day of school some students were home day in and day out with their mom or dad and are now going to school 5 days a week. It is hard sometimes to ignore, but its what you have to do to get them to grow up and be a big girl or boy who now a elementary schooler. |

| Comments: This is what I would do if it was my classroom. The co-teacher can't keep giving into him or he won't ever stop. If it is disrupting the other students learning I would have a parent teacher conference. |

| Comments: I agree, I have a student who cries after she initiates drama with other students. We have watched her laugh and have fun until she sees an adult notice her then she will pretend to be sad and start crying. It is an attention seeking and avoidance tactic. |

| Comments: This is actually a strategy I use in my preschool classroom, although it takes a few days or even weeks for it be effective, it eventually does work. I think this is a good strategy and getting the parents involved can absolutely help. |
