  Case: Great grades, Bad attendance
There is one student in the class with exceptional grades. They are excelling in reading and math. However, they are on the verge of retainment due to excessive absences. I have spoken with the student and sent notes home to the parents. What could I do? I don't want the student held back.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would pull the student aside and see why they haven't been coming to school and if its is urgent I would then talk to the principal to see if he or she can help this student out.

Comments: It might not be beneficial to the student if they are pulled to the side and forced to explain why they have poor attendance.

Comments: I wouldn't necessarily pull the student aside, as a teacher, due to the chance of getting to emotionally involved, but I would perhaps advise him or her to going to see our guidance counselor. With this particular solution I feel that more pressure would be put on the student than need be which could possibly change his or her attitude as well as grades.

Comments: I think it might help to talk to the student to make sure everything is ok at home but at this point parents and administration need to get involved.

Comments: Great response and if I could involve the social worker or guidance counselor I would do that as well.

Comments: I do not think that the student can be held responsible, depending on age. The parents need to be spoken to in many cases, as the principal wouldn't be able to increase their attendance either (though they should be involved and updated on this case).
