  Case: Purposefully Being Disobedient
In a class I was an intern for, there was a young boy who would purposefully not follow directions given. For example, when told to create a poem with a drawing, the student wrote a poem and turned it in with no drawing. The teacher asked the boy to create a drawing, and about one minute later, the boy came back with pencil scribbles all over the paper. Mind you, this student has plenty of his artwork on the wall (along with his other classmates) and seemed to be in a hurry throughout this behavior. The teacher let him know the drawing must be done with the supplied crayons and must represent his poem. Finally, he turned in a beautiful assignment. What do you think could be causing this behavior and why?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This is a strong case of needing parent involvment.

Comments: I disagree wholeheartedly. Getting the parents involved at this step would be absolutely unnecessary and might even make the problem worse. I would have continual conversations with the student about why he feels so rushed (do they have an anxiety problem? Do they want to move on to another activity?). Repition and clearly stated goals I think would be more appropriate

Comments: It can be hard to pinpoint exactly what it is that is causing the child's behavior, however I wouldn't ignore it. I think the teacher handled it well, but I can see how ongoing disruptions like this can delay classroom instruction for the rest of the students and create distraction. If behavior continues I would begin with a warning after the first offense, followed by a phone call home or conference with parents, lastly a discipline write up or referral to the school guidance counselor.

Comments: While parental involvement probably could help in this situation, in the long term, it is not so simple to get that accomplished and get this student to respond to instruction quickly. Also, the teacher needs to have a bond with this student, which can occur even if the parents are not involved. It is part of a bigger solution for this student but one that might not be so realistic right at this moment in time.

Comments: I disagree, depending on how it plays out. In that particular situation, I don't think parental involvement was needed because after being given attention, the student completed the assignment.

Comments: I completely disagree with this solution. I think there is plenty that could be done before getting parents involved. Also, his actions are not so severe that it would warrant parent involvement, in my opinion.

Comments: I think first it is important to talk with the student and see if this can be resolved. I do not think it is necessary to get the parents involved with this type of behavior.
