  Case: Great grades, Bad attendance
There is one student in the class with exceptional grades. They are excelling in reading and math. However, they are on the verge of retainment due to excessive absences. I have spoken with the student and sent notes home to the parents. What could I do? I don't want the student held back.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This is very disappointing, keep encouraging the student to come to school and maybe talk to the principal about solutions.

Comments: Going right to the principal with a situation that has not been handled by contacting parents directly, not through the student, is not the way to go about it. The teacher must exhaust all channels prior to contacting the principal.

Comments: I think that talking to the student is a good idea and the principal but i do not think that is the only possible solution.

Comments: That won't really work with a student who barely shows up.

Comments: I do not think that student encouragement is the issue, in this case it is likely the parents that need encouraging as the student is obviously attentive and present when they are in class.
