Case: Uninvolved parent
I have a parent in my internship class who does not care about the students misbehavior. What can I do to try to get the parent more on the same page with me?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I think the first step would be a conference with the principal or other administration involved. Do NOT attack the parent or make them feel like they are incapable, but rather suggest that there are some things they can try at home that will benefit the child, and ultimately probably help the parent in the long run as well. Chances are if they are misbehaving in class, they are at home as well. Perhaps the parent does not know what to do when faced with these problems at home, so suggest some tips and ways to redirect and praise the good behavior so that the child wants to listen and behave. Do not underestimate the power of positive reinforcement! If the problem persists beyond that, perhaps it is the undertones of something more serious, and the school's social worker is always on hand to help handle situations just like this. Sometimes it takes a trained professional! |

Comments: I think that it is important to remember to approach the parents as a "team member". Present the issue in such a way that you, as a teacher, are a team player in the pursuit of the student's success and well-being. Sometimes, it takes a conference to figure out what is going on in the student's world. |

Comments: An attacked parent is not a parent that will want to get involved anyway - this was a good tip. Good to get administration involved as well, so everyone is on the same page. |

Comments: I agree with your point of not attacking the parent or making them feel incapable. This is a situation where a parent could easily become defensive, so it is important that the environment of the meeting is not hostile. |

Comments: It is so important not to attack the parent. One of my teachers always used to blame my mother for my brother not doing his schoolwork. He is more than capable of doing it, he just chooses not to. My mom tried everything at home and she balanced taking care of us with 60 hour work weeks. After being blamed by my teacher, she found it really difficult to establish a relationship and she always felt like the teacher didn't want her involved in our schooling. I like the idea of a conference to discuss issues. |

Comments: You said something really realists that " chances are if they are misbehaving in class, they are at home as well" Parents are aware, so in this case reward good behavior and get the other school professional involved as well. |

Comments: I think that this is the best solution because while also recommending a conference, this solution recommends giving the parents some tips to help them at home to reinforce how the child should behave at school. If the problem becomes more serious, referring the family to a social worker is a great idea. |
