Case: Sexual comments.
So I have a teen male that's repetatively made sexual comments that were comedy driven towards a lot of the young females. I've already seen the teacher talk to him about it but it continued. The teacher has already contacted the parents but no improvement. What would be the best course of action?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
The teacher should teach and model appropriate behavior. The teacher should start by holding a class discussion about offensive conversations and inappropriate words that should never be used in and out of the school. The teach should then have the students create skits about comments that are hurtful and derogatory. Using the skits and language use by the students, the teacher should then model for the class the acceptable language and behavior. A short daily practice by the students should help the class stay on task. The student should be given a behavior sheet contract that makes him accountable for his behavior. His behavior contract should match the teacher's account of his behavior for the day. His parents, the school counselor, and principal should be kept updated about the student's behavior, as PBIS is a school wide initiative, and his parents can be an active part of the solution. |

Comments: The solution outlined here is a great suggestion, as it gives all the students a chance their concerns and opinions of this behavior. It also involves administration to allow for accountability to the student in question and the parents. |

Comments: Several components of this solution are original and impactful. I like the idea of having a class wide discussion. The discussion clarifies for all students what is appropriate and what is not. Also, since all students are now fully aware, they cannot make any excuses for not knowing better; they can now live up to expectations of treating each other with respect. Having the students sign a behavior contract is also wonderful. In signing the contract, the students are not only acknowledging expectations, but taking responsibility for behaving respectfully. |

Comments: I don't like the idea of students creating skits about comments that are hurtful or derogatory. We could talk about this topic, but I would not want them engaging in skits that could cause harm to some of the students in the skits. They can discuss this in a class, but directing this toward one another through a skit could be harmful. |

Comments: I would not use this approach as their is nothing funny about making sexual comments towards another student/teacher. By making comedy skits and having students act out crude and hurtful words or scenarios does not teach the student that it is not OK. |

Comments: I do not believe that a whole lesson should be dedicated to repeating to this student what he should already know. It takes away from the other student. He needs academic discipline before it turns into rape or further disrespect to women, or other peers. |
