  Case: Hallways
My students are in 9-12 ESE self-contained classroom. When we go to specials they do not want to stay in a group. I do not want to put them in a line like they are in elementary, but I do not think it acceptable for them to be so spread out and where I can't see them. How do I address this?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
If students cannot walk from specials to specials in a large group, then consider splitting the group up with the assistant of a co-teacher or an aide. Add this as a new procedure for the class and reward those who follow the rules. Remember to go over these rules every morning as a part of the morning routine.

Comments: I like this solution. Breaking students up will cause less distractions from happening in the hallways. It will also help with behavior management and with letting more people walk through.

Comments: If praise and reviewing the hallway policies are not working in a whole group transition, then I agree that this is an alternative. Breaking down the class into smaller groups will make it easier for the teacher to monitor all students and provide constant attention to each student as needed.

Comments: I like this solution. I would not try to make them all stay in one group because that will be exhausting to try to enforce. Make a new system that you go over in the morning. Write the names of all paraprofessionals on the board and assign specific students to each paraprofessional. When they see their name under a specific paraprofessional, they will know that is who they stay with while traveling to specials. They just need structure.
