  Case: Playing favorites
In my current internship, I am working in an SVE classroom at an ESE center. There is one classroom teacher, and she has two assistants. There is only one female student in the classroom. She is very bright, but has a VERY slow processing time. The aids have absolutely no patience for her. They constantly get annoyed and reprimand her for small things, but do not treat any of the other students like this. I have made it my personal goal to have a high tolerance level for her, and praise her as often as I can. My CT does not act this way toward her, but does not do anything about the attitudes of her assistants. I think she is afraid of disrupting the peace in the classroom. Does anyone have any suggestions for how this should be solved?

Maybe you could reward the teachers for not being mean to the student. I wish. They might not like that.
This is a tough call. I would ask the CT if I could personally tutor the student outside of school. Perhaps extra practice with speed (for times tables or whatever) is what this student needs. Using a token system would be good too. That is how Sylvan learning center "fixes" slow processing speed, through the student doing small assignments and getting tokens for getting everything they are doing correctly. It really works wonders in improving reading comprehension and upping the speed of things getting done.

The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement No
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue No

Comments: This solution will not solve the problem in the long run because once the intern leaves, the student will still be with the assistants. It is the assistant who need to be addressed in this case.

Comments: I would not do this it is totally wrong. If she needs help outside class that is one thing, but she has not been given an adequate chance to succeed.

Comments: This option is not one I think would work to solve the issue. The problem is the low tolerance of the aids and punishing the student unnecessarily.

Comments: The children in this classroom obviously have special needs so therefore a reward to "speed up" will not increase the accuracy of the assignments just in how fast they can be incorrectly completed. Discussing with your supervisor what you have observed about the behaviors of the aides towards this child is the first step that must be taken.

Comments: This solution does not address the situation properly. By rewarding the teacher for not being mean to the student in question, how will that help the teacher and student? I can see an after school program helping the students progress, but the real challenge is right in the classroom. To help both the teacher and the student I think talking to the teacher and the assistants in a group setting about the situation would be more helpful than providing a reward. Also talk about the classroom as a whole. It is the teachers goal to help each student in the classroom. I think by providing positive feedback towards the student in question would be helpful in many ways such as their self esteem.

Comments: I don't get why you are giving your self more work and rewarding the teachers for their bad work.
