Case: Parents that are too busy
There is a bright and cheerful young girl in the second grade classroom I am currently spending time in. She struggles with all sorts of things, but especially reading. My CT recently spoke to her father about getting more reading time in at home and he got very defensive. She said that even ten minutes a night would really help the student, but he continued that they (the parents) had to work and were too busy. What would you do to convince this parent that those ten minutes are critical to his daughter's success?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Hi Kady,
A possible solution would be write the parents a letter giving them tips to make the most out of their time with their kids. Now you don't have to make the parents feel like their bad parents, just make a list of tips for all your students and send those home. One tip might be to set aside half an hour on the weekends or his day off and have a meeting with his daughter where he read to her for 10 minutes. Another tip can be to set aside 15 minutes before he goes off to work. Maybe it means waking up his daughter 15 minutes early, but it's better than nothing. |

Comments: This is very unhelpful you are treating the parent like a child and a fool. Maybe find a way for a family hobby activity or outgoing can integrate reading. |
