Case: Pants Hang Low
I am in a classroom now and we are having an issue with one of our students not wearing pants that fit. His pants are to large and he has to walk around holding up his pants. His teacher has asked him where his belt is and he says that he left it at home or he can not find it. We have sent him to the office to see what they can do and they say that his mother says that she will handle it. Students are now beginning to make fun and I am not sure what to do at this point?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would definitely contact the student's parents. Sending him to the office might not be enough to get the message across. I would make sure the parents know that the student's pants do not fit and that he needs to wear a belt if he cannot get smaller pants. I would not blame the parents or the student, but I'd want to make sure they know I want to prevent the student from being taunted about his clothes. |

Comments: You can not always blame the parents. They might not be able to afford it. As teachers unless we are doing home visits we do not know what the situation is. |

Comments: By doing so after the mother said she would take care of it, can be taken offensively by the mother in that you think she is unable to take care of her own child. I think it is best to see if the problem is still happening and if it is, then I would get in contact with them. |

Comments: The parents have been contacted but the problem is not being resolved despite what the mother has said about handling it. The reason that this student is wearing pants that do not fit is unclear, so at this point, I think the teacher needs to either provide a belt to the student daily so he can't use the excuse that he doesn't have a belt or get in touch with a resource that can help him get a belt or pants that fit. |

Comments: I do not believe this solution is one I would use. The parents obviously know the pants do not fit the student as they have already advised they will take care of it. There could be another bigger issue at home that is the reason behind this situation. |

Comments: I would never do this. If this is a recurring issue and the parents have been notified and said they would fix the issue but haven't, there is most likely an underlying reason. It sounds as if it may be a financial problem. |

Comments: The teacher and administrators have already spoken to the parents. I don't think speaking to them again is going to help the situation. |

Comments: The family may not have the financial means for new pants that fit him or even a belt. He may be covering by saying he leaves it at home because he's embarrassed to say he doesn't have the money for one. Obviously the office has talked to the parent so they are aware, however they might have nothing they can do about it. The parents and student probably would want to prevent him being taunted for his dress, however, again, they can't. As a teacher you could pull him aside and give him string to use, if not a belt, for in school. |

Comments: You can make the parents aware of the situation. However, you cannot simply tell the parents to get him these items, as he may not wear a belt because they cannot afford one. |
