Case: Making jokes
In my internship, my CT allows call outs and sarcasm in the classroom. I am the most sarcastic person in the world, but sometimes I feel as though she can not get through a lesson because she is allowing these students to call out and make jokes every 5 seconds. How can I show her this is a distraction for most students? Also, how will I be able to stop this when I go to teach in her classroom?

When you go to teach in her classroom, I would establish a set of expectations with the students. Establish your own flow of how you want the school day to go. I understand that if there is already a routine in place, the students will be better off sticking to that routine. But implementing behavioral expectations is understandable since you are a different teacher. The changes don't need to be drastic, but they can alter the atmosphere of the room slightly. Such as, "If I am talking, you are silent." You won't be talking the entire day, and students will have plenty of time to speak with their peers. I am not sure of the rest of the conditions of your classroom, but this is how I would approach it if possible. |
