How does one approach hygiene issues such as body oder in the classroom without making kids feel uncomfortable and embarrassed?

I would address the student directly, if you have a relationship with them where you feel you can speak openly about those topics. I would politely mention the issue at the end of the day, when the student can go home and solve the problem. This issue shouldn't be discussed mid-day when no solutions are available. The student will just get anxious. But having a one-on-one where you're honest and kind could be helpful. I would be transparent and mention a time in my life where I had the same issues. We have all been there! If you feel uncomfortable doing that, and have a good relationship with the parents, I would give them a call and mention the situation, and give them the opportunity to solve the situation at home. |

| Comments: I agree with having a one-on-one conversation with the student to talk about the situation. I also like how you mentioned that this conversation should occur at the end of the day so the student is not anxious (and off task) throughout the day. One thing that I would like to add, is I am currently in a Title I school and many students do not have hygiene products available to them. You can see if the school has any items available for the student to have. Going to the Dollar Store and keeping a couple deodorants, toothbrushes/paste, etc. on hand to also offer the student during the conversation could be beneficial for students who may not have these resources available to them at home. |

I definitely think like you said that it should not be brought up in the middle of the school day as this could make the child feel very self-conscious and embarrassed.
