Case: Parents that are too busy
There is a bright and cheerful young girl in the second grade classroom I am currently spending time in. She struggles with all sorts of things, but especially reading. My CT recently spoke to her father about getting more reading time in at home and he got very defensive. She said that even ten minutes a night would really help the student, but he continued that they (the parents) had to work and were too busy. What would you do to convince this parent that those ten minutes are critical to his daughter's success?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I think you should really encourage the student to take charge of her reading and try her best to practice at home. I think this decision should not only involve the parents, but also the student. You as a teacher could give her a book to take home every night so she can read. You could also mark pages for her so she knows where to start and stop in the book. This way she won't have to ask her parents if its been 10 minutes yet. |

Comments: I think this is helpful, but I don't think it's the best solution. It would be better if someone were able to read with her so that way when she is struggling, someone can guide her. Reading on her own I think would only cause her frustration when she is unable to comprehend a specific phrase or word. |

Comments: I don't necessarily agree with this solution because the girl has trouble reading so I don't think having her read at home if her parents aren't going to help her will be beneficial. |

Comments: Yes the student can take charge of her reading but if she is having trouble reading then reading on her own will not help. It is better for her to read with someone that can help her. |

Comments: Having a take home assignment with expectations. 3 pages needs improvement, 5 pages class average, 6 pages fast reader, 6+ super reader. Sometimes knowing the grading can make students more competitive. |

Comments: I would never do this in this situation. The reason I disagree with this solution is because a second grader should not be expected to take charge of their own reading. |
