Case: Parents that are too busy
There is a bright and cheerful young girl in the second grade classroom I am currently spending time in. She struggles with all sorts of things, but especially reading. My CT recently spoke to her father about getting more reading time in at home and he got very defensive. She said that even ten minutes a night would really help the student, but he continued that they (the parents) had to work and were too busy. What would you do to convince this parent that those ten minutes are critical to his daughter's success?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
My first question while reading this is if the parents are at work, then where is the child? Is the child with the grandparents or a babysitter? The parents could ask for the grandparent or babysitter to do the reading with the child. I would send home a newsletter or a reading log (that is a grade) for the students (whole class) to complete. I would make the reading a requirement for the whole class to make the parents more accountable for their child's education.

Comments: This is a great idea recommending outside of just the parents but other members of their family as well maybe an older sibling or a youtube video with words there are always other options to try to enhance the learning for the student.

Comments: This puts the child's grade at risk and completely disregards the parents or caretakers for the child. While it is necessary for the child to get some reading done at home, I don't think this is the way to guarantee that.

Comments: This still might not engage the parents, they still may ignore the need.

Comments: This is a great idea. Kind of punishment for the kids who do it but they will only get better and this way it is an expectation.

Comments: While this is a great solution in theory, it will not work in practice. I had to do reading logs for multiple classes in school growing up. Not many people seriously did them. I know a few students specifically summarized the summary on the back of the book and said they completed the reading themselves.

Comments: I think that if the parents are not taking time to read with the child that making it a graded assignment will only hinder the child.
