  Case: Classroom Theft
What do you do if you have a student that continues to steal in your classroom?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Once you have proof that a certain student is stealing from others or just from the classroom in general, I would call home to schedule a conference with the parents of the student. Before going in to the conference I would be sure to have concrete proof so that you are not accused of being unfair or singling the child out. Then I would discuss with the student possible consequences, but also set up a system where trust can be renewed between you and the students. Perhaps this can be giving the student a chance to be responsible for something so they do not think to steal as often.

Comments: Documentation and proof is essential before meeting with the parents. This solution is very good because it takes a more positive approach, assuming that the parents are willing to collaborate with the teacher.

Comments: Calling home at this point I believe is premature. First, what is being stolen, how is it available to be stolen and why would the student be left alone in a room in order to secretively steal? I am not discounting the serious nature of stealing but we must determine how and why this is occurring and counteract the opportunity to commit the crime. Unless there is definitive proof and by that I mean more than a students accusation of a theft, we have no concrete evidence in which to involve the parents.

Comments: I would use this as a solution to the problem, I think there will be a better outcome to alert the child's parents first.

Comments: If you have proof that the student is stealing you need to let administration know so that you can get help stopping the problem, talk to the student, or talk with their parents to let them know how serious the issue is with their child.

Comments: I like your solution best, by not getting the administration involved it may show the parents that you want to fix the behavior and not simply get their child in trouble.

Comments: I would never do this. I don't think the student should be given a responsibility for something after what they've done. This wasn't a one time offense, it was a recurring issue. And just by giving them something to be responsible for doesn't mean they aren't going to think to steal as often.

Comments: While I think that this is an appropriate response to the situation, I would definitely make administration aware of the problem. As well as possibly have them in the conference as well.
