  Case: Crying Teenager
Mr. Askew has a new student who was degraded to his class because her performance wasn't good in the class she was taking. Her mom has been very sick, which causes her to cry in the middle of the class or loose focus. Mr. Askew has talked to the school counselor and the department has talked to her, but the behavior seems to persist. He tries to be supportive but his options are running low.
What should Mr. Askew do in this situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I do feel that if a student is constantly crying in class and it is a daily thing, that the action should mostly be ignored while teaching or demonstrating a lesson. She does not want to cry, but her mind is elsewhere because her mother is sick. However, if it is distracting to the class, giving use of a space that she can go until she gets her head back together I think would be a good idea. She can't cry forever and it is important that we focused on learning and educating as well as being supportive of our student's feelings.

Comments: I love the idea of providing her a space to escape to. As you said, she doesn't wish to cry. But our emotions overwhelm us, and we have no idea what it is like at home for the student. Each situation is different. A place that she can escape to and have some source of privacy would give the student a chance to collect herself before returning. However, this should be monitored. However, accommodations may be required for the student to meet the standards. This could eventually cause the student to make a habit of leaving when she doesn't feel like doing any work.

Comments: I think this is a smart way of solving the issues because when someone is emotional they can't always help when they cry, however given a place/ outlet to cry in they might have more of a chance sticking it through the class without the emotions rising constantly.

Comments: I agree. I remember as I student that I hated crying in front of people. Letting her cry it out in another room would be beneficial for both her and the class and may show support.

Comments: I think giving the student a space to calm down for the first occurrence is fine. However, I think the problem should be addressed immediately instead of ignored. If she is consistently sent out of class she will miss out on learning opportunities.

Comments: This just seems rude and disrespectful to the student. She cannot control that her mother is sick, and she needs support during this rough time in her life. Ignoring her does not show that you support her at all.

Comments: While I think some distracting behaviors should be ignored, this student clearly needs help & support so I don't think ignoring the situation would be the right thing to do.

Comments: I don't think this is a great idea, the child is obviously going through a lot and just letting her cry through the pain isn't the solution.

Comments: I do not agree with this. The student needs to have her feelings validated. Maybe she should do some alternate assignments in the counselors office or independently.

Comments: I understand the intention here, but I think this will only make the student feel more alone. It is important to encourage students to express their emotions, but also to show that you care. Ignoring her will not help the situation.
