  Case: Misbehaves for Attention
There is a student in ab ESE class I volunteer in. The student will tell the teacher she is defiantly not doing what the teacher asked of her. Then when the teacher ignores her bad behavior, she shouts and yells, making it difficult to teach. She also will try to tell the teacher what to do, and prompts the teacher to tell her she's doing a good job. When she does finally receive the one on one attention, the student is an angel. Any recommendations how it could be handled for her to stop from interrupting class, especially when she knows she is?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would use positive reinforcement and behavior mangement system. I would use an incentive driven behavior management plan, where is she little to no misbehaviors she will recieve a reward (favorite candy, computer time, flexible seating, etc.) She will be held accountable for her actions and rather than being punished for them, it will bring it into a motivation for her because she will want to earn the reward. The key is finding what shes intersted and how to mold it to fit into the classroom.

Comments: I agree that the teacher should begin using a positive reinforcement and behavior management plan with the student. In the case it does not mention if the teacher has talked with the student about their actions privately, but that is a great place to start as well. In addition to the reward received, maybe it could be lunch with the teacher on Fridays/monthly depending on how the students good behavior grows, since she seems to work well one-on-one and likes personalized attention.

Comments: I have used this type of behavior management plan in the past. It was also an ESE student in a self-contained high school ESE environment with a K-1 reading level. The student often demanded attention and would have major fits of yelling and cursing. Every student in the class would earn snacks at the end of the week. If he did not have enough marks on his chart, he would not receive his snack.

Comments: Rewarding one student for behaving how they are supposed to in class so they don't misbehave might cause other students to start to misbehave so they will be rewarded for behaving how they are supposed to.

Comments: I agree, when the student is looking for negative attention it is best to derail that and reboot her to only receive the attention when she is following the classroom rules and respecting her peers. It may take a few attempts, but eventually she will catch on.

Comments: I am torn on this issue, as all of the other students in the class are behaving and not receiving special incentives to do so; however, negative reinforcement has never solved anything. This is an issue I see in classrooms often as well, and while something needs to be done, I also do not see treating "positive" (i.e. expected) behaviors to be fair to the bulk of the class.
