  Case: FCAT Struggle
A student who has been in ESOL instruction for 5 years has been unable to test out. This is not because she is unable to pass the CELLA, but because she is unable to score a 3 on the FCAT. Her parents do not understand how this system works, and are asking for clarification. They do not understand why she is still in and ESOL classroom if she has passed the CELLA. How do you explain this to them, as they have limited english proficiency themselves?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
There are many tools and resources out there than can help with this sort of problem. One possible solution is to type out an email or letter and use google translate to translate the email or letter into the native language of the parents.

Comments: I agree with this solution because it may help the parents understand what is going on. I would also have a guidance counselor and another school administrator that deals with the FCAT and CELLA to read over the letter or email that I would send home to make sure my facts are correct and that they are explained in a comprehensible way.

Comments: I think this is a good solution other than the fact that translator on a computer doesn't always work correctly.

Comments: I agree that the system needs to be explained to the parents in their native language. Translator services might work but I would have someone fluent in the native language look over the e-mail or letter before it is sent home. Or you could have a bilingual assistant or translator explain it directly to the parents.

Comments: I like that you are trying but these translators are not always good and you are assuming that they can read in Spanish. I am sure that there is someone that will be able to translate in their native tongue or there are other resources for translators.

Comments: I think sending home a newsletter that has been written in English and the families' native language would be beneficial so the parents could understand what was going on and see the words in English and the translations can be done someone who understands, knows, and is certified in the language. Also another thing to do is have a conference with the parents and someone who preferably is not the child to help translate like someone certified or knows the language.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would not use this solution. I would rather talk face to face with the family and a translator rather than typing out an email. This way, if the parents have any questions, I can have them answered right away in person with the translator.

Comments: Though this deals with the parents confusion, kind of, it does not deal with the fact the child is still in ESOL when they should not be.

Comments: You want to ask a co-worker who speaks the same language as the student's family read over the letter you draft because translators are never perfect and you want to clear the air with the parents not cause more confusion.
