Case: Child should not be in ESOL
When I was working on an ESOL case study, I chose to work with a fifth grade student at the same school where I was working on my internship. There were only two ESOL students in the school, so I did not have many options. After I observed him for a whole day, I talked to his teacher who was very frustrated with the child. He never spoke another language other than English, and was born in the US. His parents speak another language, but I do not understand why he was in ESOL. He is not on grade level as far as academics, but his teacher thinks this is because he has been babied for his whole school career. What should happen in this case?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I think the teacher should ask for the student to be re-evaluated since he obviously shouldn't be in ESOL but rather may have some sort or learning disability. It would probably be more beneficial for the student to be tested for an ESE program rather than staying in an ESOL program.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) No
The suggested solution is relevant to the case No
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement No
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue No
The suggested solution is original No
Comments: I would not be so hasty thinking its a learning disability I would go about testing him and seeing what the real problem is because it could be something else completely.

Comments: I think this is a good solution to the problem. The child should be reevaluated to see if there is a learning disability instead of being placed in an ESOL program. This would allow the student to receive the proper educational help.

Comments: I agree with this. He may be advanced enough with the English language to be able to be in an ESE class or receive tutoring that can help bring him up to grade level, without focusing on learning English only. Also, the test would demonstrate if he had more of a grasp of the social language rather than English academic language needed in schools.

Comments: Absolutely, the child should be tested for ESE, since he does not meet the criteria of being in ESOL.

Comments: I t is obvious that the student needs to be evaluated in both- ESOL , so he could be out and with some Learning Disabilities test to be help out.
