Case: No Friends
Mary was experiencing behavior and learning problems at school. She refused to do written work, she was stubborn and her teacher found her difficult to work with. Her mother was extremely worried. She also reported that her daughter was experiencing social problems and often complained that she didn’t have any friends.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would put Mary in contact with the school guidance counselor to discover any deeper issues Mary might have. As for specific classroom management, I would implement procedures and consequences that are clearly presented to the student. |

Comments: Sending Mary to speak to the counselor is not going to give her the comfort to make new friends. I think that different pairings inside the classroom may help. It sounds like she has an issue so instead of the teacher finding it difficult to work with her she should instead be working on ideas and assignments that can help implement and benefit Mary in learning and making new friends beginning with talking to her one on one where she may be bound to be more open. |

Comments: I feel that the counselor can only help so much while the rest should be done in the classroom or with homework that the mother can participate in. |

Comments: I do not think it would be necessary to get the guidance counselor involved at this point. It could just be that Mary just does not connect with certain peers or is very shy. If the teacher is able to connect with her on a more personal level, then the teacher might be able to place her in a small group that she might thrive in and show her personality. |

Comments: Great suggestion, guidance counselors are good at finding the causes of social issues as they are trained to spot them. |

Comments: I do not believe sending her to a counselor would help. The teacher should take time to get to know Mary so she can create an environment where she feels comfortable and able to learn. |

Comments: I believe that getting the school counselor involved right away instead of trying to handle the situation on your own could cause some negative behavior to arise from the student. Although it may help, it could make the student feel as though they are being put on the spot and become even more of a behavior problem when in class. |

Comments: I feel like this solution is not a good one because going to a guidance counselor is not an option that teachers should make as their first step. I would pair her up with another student to show her good behavior and give her a chance to make a friend. |

Comments: Some people just work better alone, knowing that the work will get done correctly by their own standards and not having to worry about anyone else's participation. Immediately implying that there is something wrong with her and referring her to a counselor is the wrong way to go about fixing this issue. |

Comments: I would absolutely not do this in this situation. There may not be super deep rooted problems, and sending a student away isn't going to benefit them, they should build a relationship with the teacher. Severe consequences rarely help. |

Comments: Overall I disagree with this strategy and feel it could potentially worsen Mary's problem. I feel the guidance counselor should used as a last resort after classroom methods aren't successful, such as group projects, etc. |
