  Case: Retaining Request
You are a 5th grade teacher and it is the end of the school year. A parent approaches you and requests that their child be retained. You feel that the student does not need to be retained as he has not shown any areas of difficulty in his studies. He also has received "A's" and "B's" on all his report cards and has high test scores. However, the parent claims that he is not ready to start middle school the following year. How do you deal with the situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would have a meeting with the paretns as well as administration and guidence. I would have the mother explain the reasoning for wanting to hold back their child and I would also let the administration put in their reasons for the student to either move on or be retained.

Comments: This is what definitely needs to be done. I see no reason for the student to be held back, but the parents should have the opportunity to talk about it and voice their opinions as well.

Comments: I think meeting with the parents is very important. I think the teacher should also explain district policies that require that students who meet promotion be promoted. I think the parents need to understand how retention affects student future success so asking administration to join the meeting is a good idea. The guidance counselor can also address emotional issues that may have the parent not wanting the child to be promoted but these meetings would come after the teacher attempts to resolve the issue with just the parent.

Comments: I think it would be in the best interest of the student for the faculty members, administration, and even the parents to meet up to discuss the reasoning the parent(s) think the child should be staying another year instead of moving on. I also would speak to the child and see what they feel as well. But I think the meeting would be the most important thing to help the child progress in life. I really do like this solution.
