Case: Student who likes to do work at home
You have assigned your students a group project and are allowing them to work on it in class. One group approaches you and expresses their concern that one of their group members is not working during the allotted class time on the project. This student consistently turns in work on time and has never failed to turn in an assignment. You approach the student and they claim that they like to do their work at home. How do you resolve this situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would have the group vote on working on the assignment at home or at school. Then I would see that the rest of the group wants to get their assignment done now at school. I'd tell the student sorry, but you've got to work with the rest of the students in a way that gets you and everyone else participation points. Then I'd offer suggestions for how the student could help out. |

Comments: I feel that this method would place the student in an uncomfortable situation. Rather than seeking the input of the other students, the teacher should be explaining the importance of group work to the student, and encourage teamwork. |

Comments: I do not see the purpose of having the group vote if this is supposed to be group project. Doing it this way puts the group members against each other. It is best to just explain the strict guidelines of the assignment. |

Comments: I do not feel that this solution would work and as a matter of fact, would cause discourse between the other groups involved in the same project and project guidelines. |

Comments: I disagree with this solution. I do not feel the students should vote on how the assignment is completed. They will come up with the same situation and the one student will still want to work at home. A quiet talk with the student to find out why they want to work at home instead of with the group at school, may present an answer that can easily be resolved. |

Comments: I do not think this is fair. Students need to learn to work together at school, this is a group project and everyone needs to be involved to put in their own input. |

Comments: I don't think it's a good idea to let the entire class vote because then it makes those that want to do it at home feel ostracized. |

Comments: You want to verify that the students are actually the ones doing the work, so I think using class time is a great idea. Just explain to the student that while it's great they do their homework at home, you would like to see them complete some of it at school as well. |
