Case: Student teacher lunch
I have a student who comes to my classroom and wants to eat lunch with me every day. She comes in and asks to have a "bite" of my sandwich, or for me to split my food with her. I started locking the door but she knows I am in there and will continue to knock will I open the door. She has friends to eat with, but I think she just does not like the cafeteria food and wants my lunch instead. She does not come in and talk to me either, she just sits on her phone and asks me to walk with her to a restaurant close to the school and buy her food. What do I do with this student? Do I continue to give her my food, or do I put my foot down?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
While it may seem to be mean, I would put my foot down. Before doing so, I would look into why the student is scrounging for food and asking you to buy her food close by. It may be that the student is not provided a lunch or money to buy it with and does not wish to ask her friends for either. She may see you as a parental figure. Whatever the reason, I would attempt to remedy it and insist on her going with her peers for lunches now on. Perhaps sitting in another classroom for lunch for the first few days of transition to dissuade her from knocking on your door. |

| Comments: In all types of confrontation respect between the two parties are necessary, in this case the student is not respecting the teachers wishes. Although the student may have their reasons, the teacher must see to that the student continues in normal social behavior with peers. |

| Comments: I agree with this solution 100%. Putting your foot down doesn't necessarily need to be seen as mean, because in this case, it is the only good option. Students should understand the boundary between them and their teachers, asking for their food is a boundary. Kindly asking this student why they want your food could lead to finding the root of the problem. |
