  Case: Divorced and double
One of my students has parents that are divorced. Each parent wants two sets of every paper I send home. This includes homework. I can tell that each parent wants to be the main parent and have the student do all of the homework with them. I can tell that the student does not like this because she is now having to do double the homework. Do I say something to the parents or just stay out.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This could be very difficult and needs to be handled carefully. I would talk to the guidance counselor first to maybe talk to the student about how they are feeling about the whole situation. I would then ask the parents for a conference to talk about the homework. I would let them know I do not mind sending both of them doubles of important papers but there is no need for the student to be doing the homework twice. Also I would let them know that their daughter is having some problems with the situation. You do not want the student to start to suffer in the classroom over something at home.

Comments: True. Children do not need to be stressed out, especially if there doing the same thing twice. But I mean the student must truely have a grip on whats going on in the classroom though.

Comments: I completely agree with this solution and it I would do the same thing in this situation. That is a hard place to be in, but I agree that sending home extra papers isn't a big deal, but having the student do double the homework is pointless and could have long term negative effects on the student and their education. I would meet with the parents for sure and try to agree on a healthy alternative.

Comments: I completely agree with this solution. I think it is first and foremost important to have the student and the guidance counselor sit down and talk about how this may be affecting the student. Then I think the teacher should have a meeting with both of the parents to discuss the need for only one paper to be turned in so that the student is not doing double the work.

Comments: This is a good solution. I interned in a class with a similar problem, but instead of being burdened, the child used it as an excuse to be lazy; constantly blaming unfinished work on the split. This needs to be addressed, so the student does not use this as an issue.

Comments: I believe getting an expert advice is helpful in situations like this. I believe having a conference with the parents will help recognize that maybe they should alternate like each weekend they can work together on a subject, maybe mom is really good at english and dad is really good at math. They can work together to help the student in the best ways possible instead of making it more difficult for the student.
