Case: The Super Parent Volunteer
A mother of one of your first grade students is an active volunteer in the school. At the beginning of the school year she would occasionally volunteer in your classroom. Now instead of occasionally volunteering she is volunteering in your classroom every day. You see that her child is distracted by her presence. The school has an open door policy, but you feel that the mother being in the classroom every day is affecting the quality of the student's schoolwork. Volunteers are scarce within the school and you do not want to discourage parent involvement, but you feel the mother is being overbearing. How would you resolve the situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would talk to the parent about how the students work has started to go downhill. I would tell her that I appreciate her helping in my classroom but I can see it is having an effect on the student. I would recommend that she maybe volunteer in another classroom, office, or the lunchroom. That way we get to keep out volunteer and help our students get back on the right track. |

Comments: This solution is respectful to the student and the parent. I agree that pointing out how the parents presence is affecting their child will be a good approach. |

Comments: I agree. If the teacher makes it clear that the mother's presence is affecting the child negatively, then as a parent, she should want what's best for her child and she should understand. |

Comments: This is a great idea and I think it would be a great solution. I don't think it would offend the parent if you had a nice honest conversation with them. The fact that their child is being effected and distracted by their presence should tell them that they should help less often so their child can focus and stay on track in school. I like the idea of helping in another area of the school, like the lunchroom, because then the parent would still be able to see their child but wouldn't be disruptive. |

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. I think honesty would be the best policy in this situation. I see no reason to beat around the bush to the parent. If she is that involved with the school I would think she would care about her child's academic performance and would not want to hinder it. |

Comments: This is a good solution for this issue. If the students are being distracted and their work is being effected than I would recommend she volunteer in other classrooms around the school since volunteers are so scarce. |

Comments: I agree with this statement, by telling the parent what the problem is and a solution to it can soften the blow of the conversation and the volunteer won’t feel like she is a burden to the teacher. |

Comments: I agree that as the teacher you should talk to the parent about her being there and even though I am sure her child loves her being there the child has lost focus on what the teacher is talking about and needs to focus on the teacher to learn. I would suggest even becoming a part of PTSA or something related to that so that way the parent feels involved but not as much. If they want to volunteer more than something like that I think it would be a great idea like you mention to have the parent try to volunteer in a classroom nearby where you know the teacher would love an extra hand. |

Comments: I would do the same. She needs to understand how her presence is affecting the kid's performance. |
