Case: Incentives in the classroom: treats
When I was in elementary school, a lot of my teachers would pass out candy for participating in certain classroom activities. Answering questions correctly, or jeopardy games, or get an A on a test for instance. I remember my classmates and I were always very enticed by these types of incentives, is this system allowed and praised, or is it frowned upon? What are some alternative approaches besides verbally incentivizing students?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
“If I were in this situation, I would continue doing this because I know I have seen this as a volunteer and it really get the students involved. Maybe you could have a treasure test and allow everyone to have a chance to get something out of it instead of just the ones who get A's or get an answer correct.

Comments: I do not think every one should go to the treasure box. How about the effort other students are putting? When it comes to prize, students have to earn it.

Comments: I understand your reasoning behind letting every student pick something from the treasure box and/or getting a positive reward for their good behavior, however, if a student has misbehaved all day long or even all week long, that student should not get the opportunity to get something from the treasure box. These types of incentives are used to reinforce positive behavior. If you reward negative behaviors with these incentives, then those students will have the mindset of even if they are bad and misbehave, they will still get to go to the treasure box.

Comments: Candy should not be given out. Prizes need to be earned, not just given to all.

Comments: Allowing everyone a reward would not be beneficial to the ones that were actually on task and making the right choices.
