Case: He is just being a boy!
I was in a classroom where there was a boy who most people would call obnoxious. He constantly calls out, makes fun of other students, and try to discipline other students. When trying to talk to him about what he is doing he turns it in to a joke, also the teacher had issues with the students making fun of her. When the parents have been told whats going on the dad just says " he is just being a boy, what is the big deal?" How would you handle this issue?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would first start off by pulling the student aside and letting him know the rules and procedures to your classroom and how his behavior is not acceptable. Giving the student warnings, detention, or being sent to the office is all different ways to show the students behavior is becoming a problem. Once the other students in the classroom notice he or she is getting in trouble for his actions they will begin to stop as well. As for the parents, it's hard for them to understand since their not actually in your classroom but, notifying them when the student gets detention or sent to the principles office is a good thing to do. It may grab their attention better that their son or daughter's behavior is disruptive. Even so last but not least praise the student when he or she is doing well. Praising positive aspects will reverse his actions and still gain attention but, for doing well.

Comments: This solution is useful because it will show the other students that bad behavior will not go unpunished and also alert the parents of the child who is misbehaving.

Comments: When a teacher relinquishes authority to administration they are sending a message to the students that they cannot handle the situation. Here is a scenario where the teacher needs to determine "what battles to fight" so to speak. Obviously, the student needs attention and lacks in self esteem no matter what his behavior may otherwise suggest. It appears that since Dad feels his behavior is acceptable that the student models this same behavior at home. Perhaps an in school mentor or buddy pairing with a younger student may provide the student with confidence that he needs to counteract his negative actions.

Comments: I agree with you when it comes to talking or reprimanding the student it is better to do that in private and praise the students in public so then they don't get upset or embarrassed. I also think it is a good idea to show the student there are reproductions for their actions by giving them detention when they brake the rules.

Comments: I like this solution to the problem and totally agree with it. I would use it in my own classroom and agree that if parents begin to realize how often their student is getting detention they might see the reality of the behavior problem in their child.

Comments: I like this solution. It's important that the student understand the expectations and rules of the classroom and what will happen if these are broken. The teacher should be sure that he/she enforces these rules and disciplines when necessary.

Comments: This is a good solution because parents do not always understand the struggles of a teacher. They think of the behaiors of their child, but do not take into account that the teacher is in charge of over twenty other students as well. It also puts emphasis on the teacher taking control of their own classroom.

Comments: I agree with your solution, this would call attention from the parents because the child is getting in trouble consistently and shows that "boys will be boys" is not an excuse for constant classroom interruption.

Comments: If the dad responded that way, and the child is labeled obnoxious, then it is unlikely that talking to the student will help. Stronger action would need to be taken

Comments: I agree with this approach. It is important to discipline the student to allow the student and other students to see that behavior like that will not be tolerated. I also really like that you said it is important to praise the student when he does the right behavior. A little praise can go a long way.

Comments: The solution provides a fix for the current situation, but not much in a positive way for the student in question. Though it may not be positive, it should help the student understand why their behavior is not acceptable and provide feedback to the parents that their child is misbehaving in class.
