Case: Grade Changer
You are a new 3rd grade teacher and it is the end of the marking period. You are staying after school hours to do some last minute grading and inputting grades into the system. A parent enters your room and demands to speak to you about their child's recent test grade of a "c". The parent claims that this test score will lower their child's current grade standing of an "A" to a "B" and this is unacceptable. After a long conversation that parent requests that you change their child's grade. What would you do in this situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
When grading students work such as papers, homework, tests, or projects there should always be a rubric to follow along with what is expected. This way when you are grading your students work you have evidence that the student did not meet the criteria standards. As the parent walks into your classroom you can be accepting to how their feeling but also show them why their student got this grade and how you need to be fair to all students. If this student gets more credit then they deserve then all the students deserve credit. If you really feel for the student and their parents you can access another arrangement. But, whatever you decide make sure it needs to be offered to the entire class not just this student and his or her parents. |

Comments: I thought this solution was great because it provided a way for the teacher and the parent to move forward. At the end it says that the teacher could come up with another arrangement. Extra credit that would be offered to the entire class. |

Comments: I agree that having evidence and showing the parent why their child got this grade is the best solution. The end decision needs to be fair, so I agree when you say that the final decision needs to be offered to the entire class as well. |

Comments: This is a great plan and I think it would be effective. It is always helpful to have a way to prove to parents why their child received a certain grade specifically instead of arguing with them. Having a rubric on hand for each test and big assignment would be very helpful. |

Comments: I would do the same in this situation. It is important that the parent have a rubric to go off of to see why exactly their child got the grade they did. The parent also needs to realize that changing one student's grade because of a request means a teacher would have to be fair with all students and that would through off what they need to improve on. |

Comments: I have to agree with you, keeping a record of grading rubrics and criteria standards for assignments is a great way to have evidence as to why the parents child recieved the grade they did. It is also important to accept how they are feeling. I would do this in this situation. |

Comments: I like the idea of always having a rubric. By showing parents the rubric for the assignment and letting them see exactly why their child scored a certain way, they will have a much harder time trying to say that the teacher graded unfairly or was particularly harsh on their child, because every student was held to the same standards. |

Comments: I believe this is the correct answer and I stand strongly to this, as student that are on the boarder line it can be very frustrating. Every person I am sure have had this happen to them but having a parent run in and being demanding is not the way to go. The teacher can listen and show them the rubric and go over the grades but if the teacher think this is the right way to go then the whole class should have the option to do an extra credit assignment. |

Comments: Parts of this solution are very good. Using a rubric is a must. Allowing parents to bully you is optional. First, parents can be asked politely to make an appointment for a conference since the teacher is working after hours and may not be prepared to fully explain the student's performance. I also feel that giving into parent demands when the grades are not what they should be diminishes teacher professionalism, and hurts the validity of the teacher's grading system. |
