  Case: Not Prepared?
When I was interning, there was a student in second grade who seemed to be in la la land for most of the day. He would wander around the classroom, draw on his desk, and was not prepared or pay attention in many of the lessons. When asked, he would not be able to tell you the last thing the teacher said. The student was the youngest in the class and his teachers felt that he just wasn't developmentally prepared to be in second grade. What can be done in this situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This could possibly be a situation where the student has some form of ADD or ADHD and has trouble focusing. As a teacher, you can talk to parents and get their input on the child's ability to focus, and try some strategies to motivate him to get work done in class. When students are not focusing in class, it could be for a wide variety of reasons. He may be too smart and be bored with the lessons. I would try to do some sort of testing with the student to see what his academic abilities are, and go from there.

Comments: I agree the student most likely has an attention disorder which is causing them to act out or not pay attention. That is why the student should be tested for ADHD or ADD before anything is assumed.

Comments: I too would talk to the parents first to get their support and input and then discuss and decide what the next steps are.

Comments: I agree with this solution because it looks into other reasons as to why the student is not on task. It also promotes an open communication between the teacher and the student's parents which is always an important part of a student's success.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. I think talking to the parents and getting an idea of how they get him to focus at home. Learning what strategies his parents use could be very beneficial.

Comments: I think this is a great solution. Don't assume that the student isn't focused because he isn't smart. Test him and see what his abilities are.

Comments: I think this is a great idea. The child is probably not developmentally behind, but rather cannot focus because of ADD or ADHD!
